Line-up
The album's third, Turn Back, marked the return to the traditional sextet format of previous albums. It was a stronger, more constant effort with a harder edge than Hydra. The more edgy sound of the album reflected the maturation of the group and included drummer Bobby Kimball's greater virtuosity on drums, and a more confident, mature vocal delivery from singer Joseph Williams. After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live concert in Amsterdam which was released as a two-CD set called Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released their new studio album a few months later and embarked on a tour around the world to help promote it. In this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.
In 1998, Paich & Lukather began searching through old tapes & demos to find songs that had never been recorded prior to. It was completed in 2001 as a double album titled Then and Now. It was the first album by the band without a single song titled "A". The album also contained a previously unreleased track titled "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New was a commercial failure and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis, which limited his singing ability. Additionally, Hungate returned to Nashville as a drummer, and Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.
